Hi Marco
Let’s begin with a couple of words to describe you. Why photography?
I began photography by chance. Everything began as a small passion a couple of years ago, while I was still a student in Math, at the university. At a certain point, I decided to dedicate my time and energy to better learn this art. And I actually left the university to attend a photography school in Firenze, In order to learn the technical part of photography and to know this world better.
Where do you find your inspiration? Is it a photographer or perhaps a painter that inspires your work, or is it simply in your imagination?
I often get my inspiration from the world of cinema. For example, when I go see a movie, during the film I take notes, for small ideas, small photos that make me think of a certain image that I later want to turn into a photograph. I then work some more on that idea and if I can, I put it in practice. The photographer that I admire the most and that inspires me is Peter Lindberg (http://www.peterlindbergh.com/). I even did my thesis on his work. I believe that his work is truly intense! Yet many times, I must admit that although I start from a clear idea and plan, in the end is the improvising that gives me the best results.
Besides your ideas, I like a lot the angle and approach of your photographs, as well as the truthfulness of your models. What are you thinking at when you create these images?
When I shoot with my models, I am very concentrated, in order to find what’s most flattering for them, in my own mind. My models are almost always neutral in terms of time, because I don’t like to pin a photo to technology or a certain moment in life. For this reason, I hardly ever insert any contemporary elements in my images. Perhaps it’s the influence of the 30’s-40’s photographers that lies in me as well.
Can we call you a commercial photographer or a conceptual one?
I prefer to be considered a conceptual photographer, although I don’t always express a clear concept in my images. I often work on a photo simply because I think it’s beautiful, without any particular depth, but only for the beauty it describes. Besides this, I do try do develop the ability to get my self more involved in the world of commercial photography, seeing that this art has already become my life. And since I want to turn it into my main source of income, I don’t want to do it without passion.
What does a photo must contain so that you like it? So that you see it as special.
In order to really like a photo, it must be in line with what I feel in that particular moment. I am very selective in the choosing of the images, and I am also very quick and hard in judging. I can tell if a photo doesn’t please me in the first couple of seconds, because it has to have the right elements all together in order to give harmony to the scene. My eyes understand this before my mind and I always trust them. Yet, in order to be really special as a photographer, one must be original. And original photos unfortunately, there are very few nowadays…
When do you know you’ve done a great photo? What is it that you’re looking for?
Speaking of images portraying models, I know that I’ve done a great photo when I find the right combination of framing, model’s expression and light. If this happens, and it doesn’t happen often, I know it even while I press the shutter. I understand that in a few moments I created the magic that I wanted and that I froze it for good.
Is it difficult for a photographer to launch and promote itself nowadays, especially in the digital era, when everyone seems to (know how to) photograph?
Yes, I believe it is quite difficult, as it is for me too, since I’m at the beginning. Nowadays it really takes very little to take good photos, technically speaking. So it becomes more and more important to distinguish yourself with the ideas you have and less with the technical aspects.
Photography – art or simply a business? Can you find a middle way?
For me photography is an art. But among all, is art that goes best with business, and this is what is most sought of in the world of commerce, especially in fashion and advertising. Therefore, I think of it as an art, and I always strive to create a “work of art”. And when I get paid for this, then I can say I found the middle way and the best way to work.
How did you proceed in your collaboration with the ad agency “A & D ImageMake”? Have you contacted them? Have they done that?
The collaboration with A&D ImageMake Agency was born several months ago and thus I had the opportunity to start my first professional work. They found me through Facebook, seeing my online photos and portfolio. I am very interested in the world of fashion photography, while A&D is an advertising agency. Still, this collaboration is very useful to me to gain experience, but I am also available for any offers and demands from fashion agencies, since it is my favorite area.
What do you think a young photographer should do to be noticed?
The most important thing is to have a personal style. One must work a lot on the style, to get unique and different photos. And after this, I believe it is very important to be proficient in post processing, and be able to work with programs such as Photoshop and understand the Internet, to promote your own work. These three things are very important to try to be somewhat recognized, so do think about these aspects.
Any projects in the near future?…
In this moment, I don’t have any specific ideas. The only thing is that I don’t want to stop, because I am very determined and I want to find my way in this world. Photography has become my main passion and I hope to keep it for ever. Other than this, I am thinking about gaining some experience outside Italy, because I don’t think it offers too many opportunities in the world of photography. I understand that a photographer should keep going and developing, in order to be noticed. I want to try to get to know the English world of photography, London, and try to contact some agencies, or perhaps all of them, to find work in the particular area that I’m interested in.

Iniziammo con qualche parole a descrivere te. Perche fotografia?
Ho scelto di dedicarmi alla fotografia per caso. E’ nata come una piccola passione qualche anno fa, quando ero ancora studente di Matematica all’università.
Ad un certo punto ho deciso che preferivo dedicare le mie energie e il mio tempo ad imparare meglio quest’arte, e infatti ho lasciato l’università e mi sono iscritto ad una scuola professionale di fotografia a Firenze per imparare meglio la tecnica e conoscere meglio questo mondo.
Dove trovi le tue idee? Ce un fotografo/pittore che ti ispira o pure e la tua immaginazione?
Visivamente prendo spesso ispirazione dal mondo del cinema. Per esempio quando vado a guardare un film durante la visione prendo appunti, per piccole idee, piccoli fotogrammi che mi fanno pensare ad una immagine particolare, che voglio trasformare in fotografia. Ci lavoro un po’ sopra e poi se riesco la realizzo. Il fotografo che ammiro di più in assoluto e da cui sicuramente traggo ispirazione, anche se non ci penso, è Peter Lindberg (http://www.peterlindbergh.com/). Ho fatto anche la mia tesi su di lui. I suoi lavori per me sono incredibilmente intensi! Molto spesso comunque devo dire che anche partendo da un’idea e un’organizzazione di base, alla fine l’improvvisazione del momento è quello che mi dà i risultati migliori.
Oltre le tue idee, mi piace molto il angolo e l’approccio delle foto e la naturalezza delle modelli. A cosa pensi quando stai creando queste immagini?
Quando scatto con i miei modelli sono molto concentrato, per cercare quello che è più bello da vedere nella mia mente. I miei modelli sono quasi sempre neutri, senza un tempo preciso, potrebbero essere anche persone di tanti anni fa. Infatti non mi piace legare una foto ad un momento preciso della vita e della tecnologia. Per questo motivo non inserisco quasi mai elementi contemporanei nelle mie immagini. Forse questa è l’influenza di fotografi di 30-40 anni fa che vive anche dentro di me.
Possiamo chiamarti un fotografo commerciale o un fotografo concettuale?
Mi piace molto di più essere considerato concettuale, anche se non sempre nelle mie immagini esprimo un concetto. Spesso scatto e lavoro su una foto solo perchè la ritengo bella, senza un idea di fondo profonda, ma solo per la bellezza che esprime. A parte questo però sto sviluppando le capacità per inserirmi meglio anche nella fotografia commerciale, visto che per me ormai quest’arte è la mia vita, e vorrei che fosse anche la mia principale fonte di guadagno, non voglio farla solo come passione.
Cosa deve contenere una foto per piacerti? Per essere speciale?
Una foto per piacermi veramente deve essere in linea con quello che io sento in quel momento. Sono molto selettivo sul giudizio delle immagini, e sono anche molto duro e veloce a giudicare, se una foto mi piace me ne accorgo dopo 2 secondi, perchè ci devono essere i giusti elementi messi insieme che danno armonia alla scena. I miei occhi lo capiscono prima della mia mente, ed io mi fido sempre dei miei occhi. Per essere veramente speciale invece bisogna essere originale. E di foto originali purtroppo se ne vedono molto poche oggi..
Quando sai che ai fatto una foto eccellente? Cos’e che guardi e cerchi?
Parlando di foto in cui ritraggo modelle (che sono il mio soggetto principale) capisco di aver fatto un’ottima foto quando ho trovato la giusta combinazione di taglio, inquadratura, espressione della modella e luce. Se succede questo, e non succede spesso, me ne accorgo già mentre premo il pulsante dello scatto, capisco che in quegli attimi si è creata la magia che volevo, e che io la sto immortalando per sempre.
E difficile per un fotografo a lanciarsi adesso, specialmente nel era digitale, quando tutti sembrano di (saper) far fotografia?
Si penso che sia molto difficile, come è difficile anche per me visto che sono agli inizi. Oggi basta davvero poco per fare una buona foto tecnicamente, quindi sta diventando importante distinguersi per le idee, piuttosto che per la tecnica…
Fotografia – arte o pure un affari? Si puo trovare una via di mezzo?
Per me la fotografia è un arte. Ma tra tutte, è l’arte che si sposa meglio con gli affari, è quella che è più richiesta nel mondo del commercio, specie nel mondo della moda e della pubblicità. Quindi io la considero un arte, e lavoro sempre per creare un “opera d’arte”. Quando riesco a farlo anche nei lavori su commissione, quindi per affari, allora penso di aver trovato la via di mezzo, e il modo migliore di lavorare.
Come hai fatto nella colaboratione con l’agenzia pubblicitaria “A & D ImageMake”? Li hai contatatto tu? L’anno fatto loro?
La collaborazione con l’agenzia A&D ImageMake è nata da qualche mese ed è la prima agenzia che ha creduto in me, e con cui sto avendo la possibilità di fare i miei primi lavori professionali. Mi hanno trovato loro tramite facebook, guardando le mie fotografie nel mio portfolio online. Sono molto interessato al mondo della fotografia di moda, mentre la A&D è un’agenzia pubblicitaria. Questa collaborazione comunque per me è utile per fare esperienza, ma voglio precisare che sono disponibile per richieste da qualsiasi agenzia nel campo della moda, perchè è il mio desiderio.
Cosa pensi che deve fare un giovane fotografo per essere (ri)conosciutto?
La cosa più importante è avere uno stile personale. Bisogna lavorare molto sullo stile, per rendere le proprie foto diverse dagli altri, uniche. E dopo questo, oggi nel 2010 bisogna conoscere molto bene gli strumenti di fotoritocco, come Photoshop, ed essere bene collegati con il mondo di internet, per divulgare il proprio materiale. Queste 3 cose sono molto importanti per cercare di essere riconosciuti in qualche modo secondo me, quindi a chi sta iniziando a fotografare in questo momento della vita io consiglio di pensare a questo.
Quali sono li progetti foto nel futuro prosimmo?
In questo momento non ho in mente idee particolari. L’unica cosa che so è che non mi voglio arrendere, sono molto ambizioso e voglio trovare la mia strada ed il mio posto in questo mondo. La fotografia è diventata la mia passione principale e spero di mantenerla per tutta la vita. Oltre a questo, sto pensando di fare un esperienza all’estero, l’italia non dà molto spazio al mondo della fotografia, ho capito che un fotografo se vuole fare qualcosa di importante deve andare via per forza. Voglio provare a conoscere un po’ l’ambiente inglese, Londra, e provare a contattare qualche agenzia, o anche tutte le agenzie, per trovare un lavoro esattamente nel genere fotografico che mi interessa.
