New Zealand Geographic is inviting amateurs, professionals and students alike to demonstrate their skills with a camera in the country’s most prestigious photographic competition.

    Categories:

Three main categories showcase the extraordinary natural and cultural riches that make New Zealand unique. The New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year, sponsored by Nikon, will be picked from these entrants, as will the Young Photographer award, sponsored by Getty Images (for entrants under the age of 21 on Sept 30, 2010). All photos must have been shot after Sept 30, 2007, and within New Zealand territory—including New Zealand-administered Pacific and Antarctic dependencies.

    WILDLIFE sponsored by Lowepro
Capture an animal or groups of animals in their natural environment. We are looking for images which exude life and show the behaviour or adaptations which make it unique.

    LANDSCAPE sponsored by BioPaints
Showcase the wonders of New Zealand, its mountains, wetlands, coasts and plains. The judges will be looking for attention to light and drama.

SOCIETY & CULTURE sponsored by Auckland Airport
This category celebrates the traditions and relationships of all New Zealanders. The winning entry will be an image that captures our identity as a people.

    Prizes:

The winner of each category receives $1000 cash, publication in New Zealand Geographic, 10 New Zealand Geographic 2011 calendars, a one year subscription to New Zealand Geographic and a large format print of their winning image. The winner of the Young Photographer category will also receive $1000, a large format photographic print and automatic access into the New Zealand Geographic Trust Young Guns mentoring scheme. The overall winner earns the title New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year 2010, an additional $2000 cash and a guaranteed Creative Contributor contract offer from Getty Images.

Eligibility: The New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year competition is open to all amateur and professional photographers. All entries must have been shot after Sept 30, 2007, and within New Zealand, Niue, Western Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tokelau, or the Ross Dependency.

    Deadline: September 21, 2010

    No entry fee
